Commemorated on 5 June, the United Nations General Assembly established the World Environment Day (WED) in 1972 with a view to raising public awareness of environmental protection and encouraging governmental attention to anticipate environmental problems. Two years later, in 1974 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”.

The Department of Geography, University of Colombo is ready to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day on  14th June 2017 under the theme of “Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator” with series of activities. There will be an educational exhibition gathering all environment related stakeholders under one roof on the same day along with series of workshops for students in both university as well as schools. Main objective is this to enhance understanding on environmental protection and importance of becoming an active participant in protecting Mother Nature.
