{"id":224,"date":"2015-08-20T11:03:14","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T11:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arts.cmb.ac.lk\/history\/?p=224"},"modified":"2015-08-20T11:03:21","modified_gmt":"2015-08-20T11:03:21","slug":"his-4189-the-state-the-military-revolts-and-revolutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arts.cmb.ac.lk\/history\/?p=224","title":{"rendered":"HIS 4189 The State, the Military, Revolts and Revolutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Course Description:<br \/>\nThis course will look into main issues related to the themes on state building, the military, revolts and revolutions that have a major recognition in the history of the world and focus on the conflicts between competing agents of power and changing relations between the state and society from a historical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Learning Objectives<br \/>\nThis course is designed to give students an in depth understanding of the relationship between the military and modern state building, and the place of revolts and revolutions as responses from various dissenting social elements to state building in modern political formations.<\/p>\n<p>Learning Outcomes:<br \/>\nAt the end of this course, students should be able to:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tTrace the links between modern state, security and the role of the military as a historical entity<br \/>\n\u2022\tExplain how various forms of dissention can affect societies in particular historical settings<br \/>\n\u2022\tAnalyse the role of society and the state as agents of power<\/p>\n<p>Course Content:<\/p>\n<p>1.\tEarly forms of state and pre-modern notion of security<br \/>\n2.\tPre-modern forms of resistance<br \/>\n3.\tMercenary soldiers<br \/>\n4.\tThe nexus between the rise of the nation state and military<br \/>\n5.\tDiscipline and order in the military and the regime in power<br \/>\n6.\tThe military and society<br \/>\n7.\tWarfare (pre-modern, colonial and modern)<br \/>\n8.\tChanging dimensions of security and the role of military<br \/>\n9.\tRevolutions for social change and rebelling against the regime<br \/>\n10.\tRise of militant movements against imperialism<br \/>\n11.\tEmergence of \u2018protective\u2019 armies<\/p>\n<p>Assessment:<\/p>\n<p>Attendance \t\t\t \t 10%<br \/>\nMidterm Test or Assignment \t\t 30%<br \/>\nFinal Exam \t\t\t \t 60%<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Readings:<\/p>\n<p>Arendt, H.
