It covers the most important phases of the historical development of the region in the last two centuries such as the period of Eastern Question in the wake of the rivalries among the great European Empires in the nineteenth century, the Russian Revolution and the spread of the communism in the region, the collapse of the Soviet Union and its broader aftermath, and the integration of the region into the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Learning Objectives:<br \/>\nThe main objective of this course is to introduce the students to the historical importance of Eastern Europe in the world history of the last two centuries. It also gives a broader understanding of the Russian Revolution and the subsequent formation of the Soviet Union. Further, it gives the students an understanding of the historical dynamics of the region after the fall of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p>Learning Outcomes:<br \/>\nAt the end of this course, students should be able to<br \/>\n\u2022\tCritically assess the historical larger historical importance of Eastern Europe in world history in the last two centuries<br \/>\n\u2022\tEvaluate the global importance of the Russian Revolution and the rise and fall of the Soviet Union<br \/>\n\u2022\tIdentify specific aspects of the region that  significantly influence world history <\/p>\n<p>Course Content:<br \/>\n1.\tCourse Description to Eastern Europe<br \/>\n2.\tEastern Europe during the great empires up to the Napoleon era<br \/>\n3.\tThe Post-Napoleon era<br \/>\n4.\tThe Eastern Question at the end of 19th century<br \/>\n5.\tCollapse of the empire<br \/>\n6.\tNation state formation<br \/>\n7.\tThe Bolshevik Revolution and the emergence of the USSR<br \/>\n8.\tWestward expansion of the USSR<br \/>\n9.\tThe Cold War and Eastern Europe<\/p>\n<p>10.\tPerestroika and the end of the Cold War<br \/>\n11.\tCollapse of transnational state political entities \u2013 the cases of the USSR and Yugoslavia<br \/>\n12.\t Problems of post-Communist social political and economic order<br \/>\n13.\t Politics of Eastern Europe<br \/>\n14.\t The post-Cold War World Order<br \/>\n15.\t The EU and Eastern Europe<\/p>\n<p>Assessment:<br \/>\nAttendance \t\t\t \t 10%<br \/>\nMidterm Test or Assignment \t\t 30%<br \/>\nFinal Exam \t\t\t \t 60%<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Readings:<br \/>\nDavis, N.
