{"id":159,"date":"2018-06-22T08:24:15","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T08:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arts.cmb.ac.lk\/idc\/?page_id=159"},"modified":"2018-06-22T09:59:24","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T09:59:24","slug":"frequently-asked-questions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/arts.cmb.ac.lk\/idc\/index.php\/frequently-asked-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Frequently Asked Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1. <b>Can students who are exempted from the English placement test still select\u00a0<\/b><b>compulsory English Foundation CUs?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">No<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <b>Would it be possible to select English as a subject if the student has not offered\u00a0<\/b><b>English at the GCE A\/L?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">The answer is yes, but only students who are exempted from the English placement test are eligible to make this request. Such students also have to sit for a competency test\u00a0conducted by the Department of English before being admitted to the English subject\u00a0stream. Students are advised to contact the Department of English for details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <b>Would it be possible to select a course unit that the student has not offered in the\u00a0<\/b><b>GCE A\/L?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">The answer is also \u201cyes\u201d. Such students could offer a course unit such as Economics,\u00a0Geography and Demography if such departments are in a position to offer supplementary\u00a0classes. Students with no prior background in the subject area can attend these classes in\u00a0addition to the usual three-hour sessions per week allocated in the master timetable.\u00a0Students are requested to contact the lecturer concerned and\/or the Head of the Department\u00a0for details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <b>Can a student withdraw a CU(s) after sitting the end-of-semester examination of\u00a0<\/b><b>that particular CU(s)?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Once a student has sat for the final end-of-semester examination, he\/she has completed the whole process of evaluation assigned for the CU(s) in question. Therefore, it is not\u00a0possible to withdraw a CU(s) and substitute it with another after the student has sat for the\u00a0final end-of-semester examination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <b>Can a student withdraw a CU(s) before the end-of-semester examination?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">Students can make written requests to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, through the lecturer\u00a0in-charge, through the Head of the department, through the IDC Coordinator, to withdraw\u00a0CU(s) from the final end-of-semester examination for valid reasons. Such requests should\u00a0reach the IDC two (02) weeks (14 days) before the commencement of the examination.\u00a0The Faculty will carefully scrutinize these requests and will grant permission only for\u00a0requests with valid reasons. Once a student withdraws the CU, all continuous evaluation(s)\u00a0completed for the CU will also become null and void. The student has to go through the\u00a0entire evaluation process associated with the new CU when it is offered in subsequent\u00a0semesters. Students may also request to offer a new CU(s) in place of the withdrawn\u00a0unit(s). All such requests should be addressed in writing to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts<br \/>\nthrough the IDC Coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <b>Can a student select CUs ahead of time? Can she\/he select CUs from a future\u00a0<\/b><b>academic year?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">Students can only select CUs offered during the current academic year, as well as any\u00a0incomplete\/repeat CUs (if any) from a previous year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">7. <b>Can non-credit or audited CU(s) with better grades be exchanged for credit\u00a0<\/b><b>course(s) with poor grades?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">No. Non-credit and credit CUs are two different categories, and students are required to\u00a0maintain this distinction throughout the degree programme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">8. <b>Can students request to repeat end-of-semester examinations?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">The Faculty does not entertain requests for repeat end-of-semester examinations. At the\u00a0end of the first semester, final end-of-semester examinations are held only for course units\u00a0offered during that semester. Therefore, if a student misses a final end-of-semester\u00a0examination, he\/she has to wait until the relevant course unit(s) is offered again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">9. <b>Can students sit for the end-of-semester examination without completing continuous\u00a0<\/b><b>evaluations assigned for the unit(s)?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">No. According to the By-Laws, it is mandatory to complete at least 50% of all\u00a0continuous evaluation assigned for the unit(s) for the student to be eligible to sit for the\u00a0end-of-semester examination. For example, in cases where there are two assessments\u00a0assigned for a particular CU, students are required to complete at least one of the\u00a0assessments to make them eligible to sit for the end-of-semester examination of the CU in\u00a0question. Those who sit for the end-of-semester examination without completing the\u00a0minimum required number of assessments, (whether inadvertently or purposely) will be\u00a0considered repeat candidates. Students are strongly advised that it is not possible even\u00a0to make requests to complete continuous evaluations after completing the end-of-semester\u00a0examination without prior arrangements with the Department concerned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
