Course Description:

The Department of English Language Teaching has been offering Intensive Courses in English for all new entrants to the Faculty of Medicine every year. The entire batch at the Faculty of Medicine, consisting of about 220 students, sits the placement test in English (Pre-test) at entry level. This test is a 1 ½ hour examination that covers grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing, mostly pertaining to medical content. The Intensive Courses are conducted for 4-6 weeks in duration and concludes with a post-test which comprises the same structure and components as the placement test to gauge students’ English language proficiency level at the conclusion of the course.

For the Intensive Courses in English, students are allocated to mixed ability classes where English for Academic Purposes (EAP) focused teaching material is used to gear students towards their academic studies.

The DELT also offers Intensive Courses in English to the new entrants of the BSc Physiotherapy Programme of the Department of Allied Health Sciences, and the students of the Department of Pharmacology.

Testing:

  • Pre-test at the beginning of the course
  • Post-test at the end of the course
