Proficiency Courses in English
Level 1:
A Remedial Course in English is offered for First year undergraduates of the Faculty of Management who have scored below 40 marks at the placement test. This course is done in the first semester.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to
- Understand the general meaning of a short text and answer simple questions
- Write short descriptions on personal/familiar topics
- Communicate meaningful statements on familiar topics
- Can understand simple sequence markers and main ideas in a short spoken text

Level 2:
Proficiency Course in English: Level II is offered for a duration of two semesters in the Second Year. While the course aims at helping students achieve benchmark level 5 in their English language proficiency, the course content covers reading, writing, listening and speaking skills required for benchmark level 5. The assessment criteria for the course comprises three assignments (35%) (to test their reading, speaking and writing skills) and a final paper (65%). This is a compulsory non-credit course.

- To help students achieve University Test of English Language Benchmark Band 5 level in their English language proficiency

Level 3:
This course is offered in the Second Year and the Third Year and offers a blend of Business English and Academic English aimed at fulfilling selected areas of the UTEL Academic Benchmark Band 6 requirements. The content is presented in thematically or functionally designed modules. An ESP/EAP approach has been taken in designing this course with the reading and listening texts covering a range of topics from the business world/ current business news, while the activities cover academic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This is a compulsory non-credit course.

Level 4:
Functional English and Basic Academic Writing – BBA 1200
This is a first-year compulsory two-credit course offered in collaboration with the Department of Management Organization Systems. The course is designed to support students to develop basic English language skills necessary for the English-medium education they undertake in the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme and to introduce them to academic writing conventions. The course offers students training in using the English language clearly and effectively primarily in academic writing and secondarily in academic speech.
Objectives of the Course:
- recognize the importance of academic writing in the BBA degree programme
- differentiate academic writing from other forms of writing
- recognize and use features of academic writing
- explain the concept of plagiarism
- indicate their familiarity of accepted academic writing through the use of proper paragraphs, tables, figures, and (American Psychological Association) guidelines for paraphrasing, in-text citations and compiling of a reference list or a bibliography.
- make proper use of style, vocabulary and grammar related to academic writing
- construct meaningful paragraphs
- read, interpret and write case studies
- make presentations related to case studies

English Everyday
The course is offered in the Third Year and is designed to support students face a variety of rhetorical situations. It focuses on maximizing functional ability in these situations. Speaking has central focus while some writing and reading are done when necessary. Through each module, students engage in activities that are organized to increase the challenge in terms of interactional speaking skills. Some time is also spent in developing transactional speaking as a means of developing confidence in the student’s ability to hold the floor in formal situations. This is a compulsory non-credit course for all HRM students.

- To instil confidence in students to use the English language in a wide variety of formal and informal situations
