Nimasha Malalasekera
Nimasha Malalasekera completed her BA in English at the University of Colombo in 2016. Her BA thesis is titled The Contact between Sinhala and English Orthography in Online Text Messages. Following her graduation, she taught English as a second language (ESL) at the Department of English Language Teaching of the University of Colombo and at the Department of English Language Teaching of the University of Kelaniya. She completed her MA in Applied Linguistics with a concentration on second language acquisition and teacher education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, USA in 2019. Her MA thesis is titled Postwar Reconciliation: Parental Attitudes towards Sri Lanka’s Trilingual Education Policy. At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, she taught an ESL Academic Writing course. At present, she is pursuing her PhD in Anthropology with a concentration on ethnolinguistics at the University of Montreal, Canada. As a Graduate Research Assistant, she contributes to a research project on power and ritual in Himalaya conducted by the Groupe de Recherche Interuniversitaire sur le Tibet et l’Himalaya (GRITH). Her research interests are language ideologies, language attitudes, language change, language and culture, linguistic identities, languages of South Asia, language policy of Sri Lanka, and the indigenous Vedda language of Sri Lanka.
