World Population Day Celebrations – 2022

World Population Day which falls on the 11th of July was commemorated by the Department of Demography, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka on 19th of August 2022 at the Faculty of Arts premises under the theme of “A World of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all” in aligning with the global theme.
The Chief Guest of the event was Senior Professor H.D. Karunratne, Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo. Mr. Kunle Adeniyi, Country Representative of UNFPA Sri Lanka participated as the Guest of Honor and Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu, Dean, Faculty of Arts addressed the gathering.
Emeritus Professor Lakshman Dissanayake, Former Vice Chancellor and Former Chair Professor, Department of Demography, University of Colombo and Professor (Chair) Sunethra Perera, Department of Demography, University of Colombo presented as the Guest speakers of the programme.
In parallel to the population day celebration, Department of Demography organized a Debate Competition and a Digital Poster Competition to add more meaning to this celebration. Winning teams and the participants of the Debate and the Digital Poster Competitions were awarded by the distinguished guests of the programme to acknowledge their talents.
