The Department of Economics offers a one year course on development theories, issues and policies, leading to the Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Development (DED), to graduates and professionals who have not specialized in economics but have since developed some knowledge of and interest in, issues of economic development. The DED was inaugurated by the University of Colombo in 1984, with the aim of meeting the following objectives:

* To impart knowledge of economic, political, social and other factors behind the underdevelopment; policies and measures adopted to tackle problems arising from under-development; policy constraints and limitations facing policy-makers in their endeavors to promote development.

* To enable students to attain a greater technical, analytical and diagnostic competence in the field of development economics.
