The Demographer Journal Launching
Launch of “The Demographer” Department Journal Vol. 1 Issue 1 (December, 2023)
The Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo marked a significant milestone in its academic journey with the ceremonial launch of eight academic journals on 13th of February 2024. The department’s journal “The Demographer”, Volume 1, Issue 1 was also launched at the ceremony.
The ceremony was graced by the Guest of Honor, Senior Professor H.D. Karunarathne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo. Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Professor Emeritus Sirimal Aberathne from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, added further distinction as key figures at the event.
The event showcased the diversity of academic pursuits within the university, with journals of different disciplines such as Demography, Geography, International Relations, Economics, and Sustainable Tourism. Additionally, the Faculty of Arts also launched its trilingual journals – “KOLAMBA” the Sinhala journal, “KOLOMPU” the Tamil e-journal, and the Volume 8, Issue 1 of “ColomboARTS” the English e-journal.
The sequence of events saw the editors of the respective journals and the Dean of the Faculty, Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu presenting the journals to the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor H.D. Karunarathne. The Guest Speaker, Professor Emeritus Sirimal Aberathne provided insightful reviews of each journal, highlighting their academic contributions and significance.
As the event drew to a close, Dr. Kumudika Boyagoda, Head of the Department of Demography, University of Colombo, delivered the closing remarks emphasizing the scholarly excellence of the journals and the collaboration that defined the journal launch ceremony.
The ceremonial launch of these academic journals not only signifies the Faculty of Arts and the University of Colombo’s commitment to advancing knowledge and scholarship but also opens an opportunity for a new era of academic discourse and collaboration within the faculty, the university community and beyond.
