Young Geographers Society
Established in 2023 under the guidance of Dr Pathmakumara Jayasinghe, a renowned geologist attached to the Department of Geography, the Young Geographers Society is dedicated to fostering a passion for geographical studies among students. The society serves as a dynamic platform where students can enhance their talents and skills beyond academic boundaries, engaging in meaningful activities that contribute to both personal and professional growth.
The society operates through several key avenues, including community outreach, geographical explorations, skills development, and personal well-being. These initiatives provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate a sense of responsibility toward their environment and society.
Active participation in the Young Geographers Society encourages students to engage deeply with the subject of geography, fostering a greater appreciation for its relevance in understanding the world around them. Moreover, the society plays a crucial role in building cohesion and collaboration among students as well as faculty members, creating a supportive and stimulating academic community where ideas can be shared, and innovations can thrive.
This special edition of Blue Planet Magazine is launched by the National Environmental Pioneer Forum of the Central Environmental Authority and the Department of Geography of the University of Colombo to commemorate World Water Day 2025, an occasion that calls for reflection, dialogue, and action toward safeguarding our water resources. The magazine is a platform to explore and highlight diverse aspects of water, its role in climate stability, its influence on health and ecosystems, and its potential as a driver of economic and technological innovation. A unique feature of Blue Planet is the contribution of university students, whose voices bring fresh perspectives, research-driven insights, and innovative ideas to the forefront. The collaboration between the Central Environmental Authority and the University of Colombo has enabled these young scholars to showcase their academic expertise and passion for environmental conservation.
