Workshop: Small State Capabilities in Managing Regional Power Rivalries on June 19, 2025

On June 19, 2025, a research dissemination workshop titled “Small State Capabilities in Managing Regional Power Rivalries: A Case Study of Sri Lanka” was held at CALL, Department of International Relations, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. The event was organized by the Department of International Relations in collaboration with The Asia Foundation and the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies(RCSSS). The research workshop commenced with an introduction by Prof. Melegoda, followed by Ms. Radhika Abeyrathna, Senior Program Manager (MERL) at The Asia Foundation. An overview of Sri Lanka’s current context was provided by Dr. Pavithra Jayawardena, Head of the Department of International Relations.

A case study presentation was delivered by T. S. P. Maheshi and Sayuri Mohotti, Program Officers from the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies, which highlighted Sri Lanka as a case study. Professor Nayani Melegoda, Senior Professor in International Relations, then provided a review of the South Asian regional landscape.

The student activity involved fourth year and third year IR (Hons) undergraduates from the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, and was moderated by Dr. Kulani Wijayabahu. This activity was followed by presentations, which showcased the critical engagement of IR (Hons) students. The workshop concluded with a certificate awarding ceremony for participants, recognizing their contributions. The event fostered academic discourse and collaboration, offering students practical exposure to regional power dynamics and small state strategies, while facilitating engagement with experts and peers.
