International Workshop on Climate Change and Anthropogenic Activities : Impact on Coastal Development and Management

The Department of Geography, University of Colombo – Sri Lanka, and the Island Research Center, State Oceanic Administration, P.R.China (IRC-SOA) were jointly organized the International Workshop on Climate Change and Anthropogenic Activities : Impact on Coastal Development and Management, in order to promote the research and capacity building in the  field of marine science, especially in the areas of coastal erosion and protection, risk management, climate change impact, vulnerability and adaptation, sustainable management and other related fields of oceanography.

Coastal Zone Management is a process for the management of the coast using an integrated approach, regarding all aspects of the coastal zone, including geographical and political boundaries, in an attempt to achieve sustainability. It incorporates all the subjects reflecting the altering character of numerous beachfront territories, from conventional asset based lifestyles to administration based tourism and recreation lifestyles. In current century, the coastal zones are more and more important, because a majority of the world’s population are living in the coastal zones. Coastal zones are continually changing because of the dynamic interaction between the oceans and the land, Coastal erosion, as the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds and mainly anthropogenic activities actually has caused risks for coastal management.
