3rd International Research Conference on Geography for Global Sustainability – IRCGGS 2027

The Department of Geography at the University of Colombo is pleased to invite scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to its forthcoming international conference, “Mapping Tomorrow’s Landscapes through Climate Adaptation and Regional Transformation.” This conference aims to serve as a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary dialogue on the urgent challenges posed by climate change and the transformative strategies needed to build resilient, sustainable, and equitable futures. Sessions will explore a wide spectrum of themes,

  • Geospatial Technologies, AI, and Spatial Analytics – Exploring the role of emerging technologies in mapping, monitoring, and modelling environmental and urban systems.
  • Climate Change, Meteorology, and Disaster Resilience – Addressing climate variability, extreme weather events, and strategies for building resilient communities.
  • Earth Systems, Geology, and Geomorphology – Investigating the physical processes shaping the Earth’s surface and their implications for sustainability.
  • Water Resources, Coastal Systems, and Blue Sustainability – Focusing on the management of freshwater and marine ecosystems, coastal zone planning, and the blue economy.
  • Ecosystems, Biogeography, and Indigenous Sustainability – Examining biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Urbanization, Population, Health, and Sustainable Communities – Analysing the intersections of urban growth, demographic change, public health, and community well-being.
  • Agriculture, Industry, Tourism, and Regional Economic Development – Exploring sustainable pathways for primary industries, manufacturing, and service sectors in regional contexts.
  • Transport, Governance, and Sustainable Development Policy – Investigating the role of infrastructure, institutional frameworks, and policy instruments in achieving sustainability goals.

We particularly encourage contributions that bridge the gap between scientific research and on-the-ground implementation, as well as those that foreground local knowledge and inclusive approaches. The conference will feature keynote addresses by distinguished scholars, interactive panel discussions, and dedicated sessions for early-career researchers.

The Department of Geography at the University of Colombo, one of the oldest academic institutions of its kind in Sri Lanka, remains at the forefront of exploring these evolving global trends. In recognition of the critical issues facing contemporary society, the Department is pleased to announce its intention to host an international research conference. This research conference will serve as a platform for discussing innovative solutions, mitigation strategies, and sustainable research frameworks aimed at conserving the planet’s dwindling natural resources and protecting its threatened biodiversity.

The conference is designed to open new avenues for scholarly exchange, offering participants the opportunity to present their research findings and engage in critical discussions with peers and experts. Each session is thoughtfully structured to commence with a brainstorming segment, led by distinguished professionals and specialists, to foster dynamic and forward-looking dialogue. The Department of Geography extends a sincere invitation to potential collaborators and partners to join us in this important event. We welcome engagement in various capacities and look forward to forging meaningful partnerships that will contribute to the success and impact of this conference.
