The Multicultural Centre is established under the funding provided by Ethnic Cohesion component of HETC project of the University of Colombo. The opening ceremony of the centre was held on 27th of November 2015 at the Department of Sociology where Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo graced the occasion as the chief guest. Other distinguished guests for this event included Prof. Athula Ranasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Prof. Thusitha Abeytunga, Director, University Grant of HETC; and Dr P Wijetunge, Librarian of the Main Library of the University. The opening ceremony of the multi-cultural centre was followed by a book launching event of two books- ‘kallaththoni’, a translation by Mr Swaminathan Vimal and ‘Sinna Thuraiyin Sriya Ulagam’ a translation by Mr Ravi Rathinavel. The Multicultural Centre operates under the Department of Sociology and focuses on communal diversity as well as on cultural teaching and learning. The founder of this Centre is Prof. Premakumara de Silva and presently, Mr W. J. S. S. de Silva is in charge of the Centre. Membership is open to all students of the Faculty of Arts and staff (academic and non-academic).

The Centre is responsible for carrying out activities designed to promote ethnic cohesion by organizing programmes of such nature. Also, the Centre will provide services and facilities (maintain resources: books, journals, audio-video etc.) for students and staff to engage in a dialogue on diverse cultures from an interactive perspective.  Moreover, the Centre hopes to enhance its activities among multi-ethnic and religious Universities all around the country through research and other activities. Additionally, the Center expects to have different implications among University students and staff to create best practices for ethnic harmony.
