Department of Demography

Overview

The doctoral degree programme is aimed at meeting the academic and professional needs of those who are engaged in research and consultancy, higher levels of teaching and training, administration and management, and advocacy and policy making.

The initial registration is for the MPhil with the provision for upgrading to PhD studies on the basis of performance during the first year of studies.

Objectives

This programme is aimed at providing theoretical and practical competence in demographic aspects. Therefore, this course targets those who are already engaged in the field of demography/population studies, economics, sociology, geography, statistics, planning and related disciplines. Other interested persons are also encouraged to apply.

Duration and Others

  • Duration: PhD: Three years by research under supervision / MPhil: Two years, by research under supervision
  • Delivery mode :  Hybrid (on-site/online)
  • Medium of teaching: English
  • Weekends or weekdays: Weekends
  • Full-time/part-time: Part-time

Entry Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree with at least a second class pass from a recognised University/Institution in Demography/Population Studies; 

OR

  1. A Bachelor’s Degree in Demography/Population Studies or any other related discipline, with  minimum of two years of experience in a related field; 

OR

  1. Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF 8) in Demography/Population Studies from a recognised University/Institution or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts and the Senate of the University of Colombo; 

OR

  1. Any other professional qualification from a recognised professional body acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts and the Senate of the University of Colombo with a minimum of three years learning/work experience in Demography/Population Studies; 

OR

  1. Completion of NVQ level 7 (Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in SLQF) with relevant work in the field of Demography/Population Studies as determined by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts and the Senate of the University of Colombo.

AND 

A good knowledge of the English language and satisfactory performance at a selection test and/or an interview.
