Awards ceremony of the Inter-departmental Debate Competition 2021/2022 - 31st Aug.

The certificate and awards ceremony of the Inter-departmental Debate Competition 2021/2022 of the Faculty of Arts was held on 31st August 2022 at the M. B. Ariyapala auditorium under the patronage of Senior Professor H. D. Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo and Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo.

The Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo organized an Inter-Department Undergraduates Debate competition (Online) in December 2021, coinciding with the University centenary year celebrations. The event’s objective was to highlight and improve the aesthetic and soft skills of the undergraduates in the Faculty of Arts. Along with the programme, a pre-training workshop was held on September 4, 2021. The competition was conducted in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

At the awards ceremony, the Departments of Political Science and Public Policy, Geography, and Economics were distinguished as competition champions in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, respectively. The debate competition’s runners-up in the Sinhala, Tamil, and English mediums were the Departments of Sinhala, Political Science and Public Policy, and International Relations. The involvement of other departmental teams in this competition was valued just as much as that of the winning teams.

The first-ever debate competition that the Faculty of Arts organized was a success. The dean of the Faculty of Arts stated that he anticipates conducting this in the diocese again shortly. The competition had been a fascinating experience for the scholars and the staff.
