Mathematics Unit

About the Mathematics Unit

Over a decade ago, the Mathematics Unit (MU) at the Faculty of Arts was created as a support unit to help, encourage, and enlarge the knowledge of Mathematics. Usually, many in Social Sciences have had limited exposure to Mathematics. The MU helps social science students with learning Mathematics. The demand for Mathematics varies across modules in the Faculty of Arts. The Mathematics Unit endeavours to bridge the knowledge demand gap of Mathematics, and embrace mathematical skills as a second nature. The Mathematics Unit currently focuses on two goals:

● Creating a student-centred learning environment for Mathematics
● Making learning an exciting adventure to encourage interest in Mathematics

What is offered by the Mathematics Unit

The Mathematics Unit offers two foundation courses in Mathematics in the 1st Year:

Basic Mathematics

FND 1107: It provides basic mathematical foundations and essential tools for those seeking mathematical skills for general applications, and for those students who need support to prepare themselves with basic knowledge and skills necessary to follow more advanced course Unit in the 2nd Semester

Intermediate Mathematics

FND 1106 & FND 1206: Offered in both Semesters, this Course Unit offers more advanced mathematical concepts, techniques and their applications, particularly required in following honours degree programmes in the disciplines of Demography, Economics or Geography.

Intermediate Mathematics is a Credit course unit, offered in both Semesters in the 1st Year. Its successful completion is a pre-requisite for admission to honours degree programmes in Demography, Economics or Geography at the end of the 1st Year. Those students who demonstrate possessing adequate basic mathematical skills (at the Placement Test, described later in this document) can directly follow Intermediate Mathematics course unit either in their first or second Semester.
Basic Mathematics is a “Non-Credit optional” course unit. However, for those students who do not demonstrate adequate basic mathematical skills (at the “Placement Test”, described later in this document), and intending to seek admission to honours degree programmes in Demography, Economics or Geography, successful completion of Basic Mathematics in the 1st Semester is a compulsory requirement to follow, in the Second Semester, the Intermediate Mathematics course unit, which is a pre-requisite for admission to those three honours degree programmes.

Placement Test

The Mathematics Unit offers a Placement Test in the beginning of the Semester-I of the first academic year to evaluate your basic mathematical knowledge and skills. This Placement Test will help both you, as well as the Faculty, to “gauge” your entry level capabilities in Mathematics at GCE (O/L) standard. Those who demonstrate having adequate level of mathematical skills through their performance at this Placement Test will be allowed to directly register to follow the Intermediate Mathematics course unit, either in the 1st Semester or in the 2nd Semester, as per their choice.
For the benefit of those who have had limited prior exposure to Mathematics or had below-par learning experiences in mathematical applications, as may be reflected from the outcome of the Placement Test, we offer the non-Credit foundation course unit titled Basic Mathematics. The Basic Mathematics course prepares you to learn all the necessary mathematical skills to take the much harder, Intermediate Mathematics course unit. Therefore, the Faculty has decided to offer the Intermediate Mathematics course unit in both Semesters in the 1st Year, enabling those who require further assistance to acquire fundamental mathematical skills to follow the non-Credit course unit in Basic Mathematics in the 1st Semester prior to will be a compulsory requirement prior to registering for Intermediate mathematics course unit in their 2nd Semester
The MU also has taken the initiative to help refresh your basic mathematical knowledge by offering an online “refresher programme”. This will be conducted regularly, until the date of the “Placement Test”, and we recommend that you benefit from this opportunity to get yourself better prepared to face the Placement Test.
You will find that the Mathematics modules address learning of Mathematics as an art, logic, and life science. In addition, Mathematics modules enhance your confidence and skills in learning other modules. You will find that some subjects
