Welcome to the Department of Information Technology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. You will find information on this website about the present activities of the Department of Information Technology, including undergraduate programs, course offerings, facilities, staff members and special events. The Department of Information Technology, previously the Computer Teaching Unit (CTU), presently located in the Faculty of Arts was established on the direction of the University Grant Commission (UGC).

The Department of Information Technology serves the entire undergraduate population of the faculty to acquire IT related skills which are essential in achieving knowledge and skills in their respective fields of study. Recently, the functions of the Mathematics Unit were amalgamated into the IT department. In addition to Foundation course units, it offers ICT subjects for students who wish to 3-year general degree. Under the direction of the UGC and in collaboration with the SLASSCOM, the new Department of Information Technology aims at offering an IT diploma (one year) for the undergraduate students. At present, the department consists of permanent teaching and few temporary/visiting staff members.

Following the upgrading to a department, it is expected to strengthen the department’s human resource base in future. In addition to the staff attached to the department, some course units are offered with the support of academics attached to the other departments of the Faculty of Arts.
