Welcome to the Department of Information Technology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. You will find information on this website about the present activities of the Department of Information Technology, including undergraduate programs, course offerings, facilities, staff members and special events. The Department of Information Technology, previously the Computer Teaching Unit (CTU), presently located in the Faculty of Arts was established on the direction of the University Grant Commission (UGC).

The Department of Information Technology serves the entire undergraduates of the faculty to acquire IT related skills which are essential in achieving knowledge and skills in their respective field of studies. It offers a Study Stream (3-year degree programme) for students who wish to follow Information & Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D). Under the direction of the UGC and in collaboration with the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), the new Department of Information Technology aims at offering an IT diploma (one year) for the undergraduate students. The department makes arrangements to offer an IT diploma programme starting from this year. At present, the department consists of permanent teaching and few temporary/visiting staff members. Following the upgrading, it is expected to strengthen the department’s human resource base in future. In addition to the staff attached to the department, some course units are offered with the support of academics attached to the other departments of the Faculty of Arts.
