Message from Head of the Department

The Department of Geography, one of the premier departments at the University of Colombo, was established in 1963 and has consistently improved its teaching, research, and overall performance. The department offers a range of innovatively designed undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate programs. Our program offers students a variety of courses in Physical Geography, Human Geography, and technical geography, covering both theoretical and applied skills. We focus on outcome-based education and learner-centered teaching, delivering the best teaching and learning experiences through innovative methods. We keenly consider the changing nature of the world and update our curricula to meet industry requirements and stakeholder needs. All our courses in the BA degree in Geography and the General Degree program can be followed in Sinhala, Tamil, and English media.

Our well-equipped, experienced, and qualified team includes 17 permanent lecturers, 14 of whom hold PhD degrees in various fields.

An average of 50 students pursue the BA (Hons) in Geography annually, while more than 50 students include Geography as part of their General Degree Program. The Department of Geography also serves other faculties, teaching geography due to the growing importance of the subject.

As a multidisciplinary department, we maintain strong bonds with both the public and private sectors, enriching our network to provide practical and field experiences for our students through internship programs and other projects, ensuring their employability upon graduation.
