Welcome to the Department of Communication and Creative Arts website. The Department of Communication and Creative Arts was first established as the Journalism Unit in February 1991, by the Council of the University of Colombo to function under the authority of the Dean/ Faculty of Arts. In May 1992, first-Degree level programme in Journalism in the University of Colombo was inaugurated in collaboration with the Asia Foundation. The Journalism degree course curriculum was designed in 1991 by the curriculum development committee that included then Vice Chancellor Prof. G.L. Peris as Chairman, Prof. H.N.C. Fonseka, Dean/ Faculty of Arts, Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Kalakeerthi, Mr. Edwin Ariyadasa, Veteran Journalist Mr. Shavindra Fernando, Former news Editor – Rupawahini, Prof. Tilak Hettiarachchi, Prof. Jayadeva Uyangoda, Prof. J.B. Dissanayake and Mr. Romesh Fernando.

In the year 2022, the Journalism Unit was upgraded as the Department of Communication and Creative Arts under the leadership of Senior Professor Samantha Herath.

Department of Communication and Creative Arts

The Department of Communication and Creative Arts is the latest department of the Faculty of Arts. The newly established department is the first and the foremost department in a Sri Lankan university which offers a honours degree in Communication Studies with a Creative Arts focus. The department of Communication and Creative Arts expects to offer post graduate programmes in Communication and Creative Arts in the future.

The Department of Communication and Creative Arts is headed by Senior Professor Samantha Herath and Ms Fathima Shanaz, Ms Chalika Thangaraj and Mr. Krishan Siriwardhana are the permanent academic staff of the Unit. The veteran artistes and media professionals also contribute as visiting lecturers at the Journalism Unit.
