Centenary Celebrations of Humanities and Social Sciences in Higher Education
The Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo celebrated 100 years of Humanities and Social Sciences education in Sri Lanka on the 21st of January 2021.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Senior Professor Chandrika N. Wijeyaratne and the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Emeritus Professor Lakshman Dissanayake graced the occasion. The event organized at the Faculty of Arts was attended by Senior Professor Lasantha Manawadu the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Emeritus Professor Amal Jayawardane, Emeritus Professor Rohini Paranavithana, Emeritus Professor Asanga Tilakaratne, Deans of other faculties, Senior Professors, Professors, Associate Professors, Heads of Departments of the Faulty of Arts, Registrar, Bursar, representatives from the non-academic staff and students. Following the health guidelines imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of invitees was limited, and the event was live streamed to reach the staff, students, and alumni across the globe.
The event started with a tree planting and was followed by the opening of the Exercise Laboratory of the Faculty of Arts, the Support Centre for Students with Disabilities, and the opening of the renovated boardroom of the Faculty of Arts. This marked the inauguration of the centenary celebrations that will be followed by a number of academic events organized by the departments, units, and the Confucius Institute of the Faculty of Arts throughout the year.
