he Department of Demography and the Population Association of Sri Lanka (PASL) organized a guest lecture on Study on the Establishment of Maternity Protection Insurance in Sri Lank on 08th February 2017 at 3.00 pm.  The lecture was be delivered by Dr. A.T.P.L. Abeykoon – Senior Fellow, Institute for Health Policy (IHP) & Former Director of the Population Division in the Ministry of Health Care and Nutrition.

The study examines the options of replacing the current employer liability scheme of maternity benefits in Sri Lanka by a social insurance scheme. The presentation will cover the following areas: Coverage and limitations of maternity benefits in Sri Lanka; ILO recommendations of basic social protection; Benefits of a social insurance scheme; Insurance options in Sri Lanka for maternity benefits; and Estimation of maternity and paternity benefits rates. The presentation will demonstrate how to calculate the Total Fertility Rate from household survey data eg. Labour force survey data.
