Opening Ceremony of Department of Information Technology (DIT) at the Faculty of Arts
Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, marked another significant milestone to its extraordinary journey on 7th June 2023 with the establishment of the Department of Information Technology as its 13th Department. The Grand Opening Ceremony of the Department of Information Technology was held with the participation of the Vice Chancellor of University of Colombo; Senior Prof. HD Karunaratne, Dean Faculty of Arts, Senior Prof. Lasantha Manawadu, Registrar of the University of Colombo, Mr. KAS Edward, and a number of Senior Academic and non-academic members including Heads of the Departments & Coordinators of units at the Faculty of Arts. The newly established department aims at enhancing IT skills among undergraduate and postgraduate students at the faculty of Arts as well as providing much needed IT services to both students and staff members thereby uplifting overall IT environment for teaching, learning, and assessment activities. At the opening event, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Senior Prof. HD Karunaratne emphasized the importance of being an IT services department where students of other departments are equipped with required IT skills to enhance overall employability levels. Senior Prof. Lasantha Manawadu, Dean Faculty of Arts, stressed that the department is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing IT skills among students as well as proving conducive IT environment at the Faculty to conduct its multifaceted activities. The Head of the newly established department, Prof. Priyanga Dunusinghe spelled out the department’s readiness to introduce a number of new IT programmes including a new degree programme; Social Data Analytics.
